Six Reasons Why we Love Lobster-Claw Bouquets

Published:2021-05-01 14:55:26 By: Fleur Harris

The Heliconia (Lobster-Claw) bouquet is one of the most popular modern bouquets in the world. It is stylish, last for much longer than many bouquets, and best of all (for some!) look completely different to your standard bouquet. Our Bella Bermuda Hand-Tied Bouquet has been especially popular this Spring!

Here are five reasons why we love Heliconia Bouquets. Do leave a comment with your own favourite reasons as well!

1. They are stylish and modern.

The bright colours really attract you to the flowers, which is great for those who want something different! Heliconia looks like a cross between Indian shot, bird of paradise and banana plant.

A contrasting mix of red, green and yellow flowers grow between bracts, while the petals themselves are typically a deep red or orange colour.

2. They last much longer than many other bouquets

You will be able to enjoy them for a long time without worrying that they will quickly die off like hydrangeas or tulips. Those are more temperamental floral arrangements that require special care to keep beautiful. Lobster Claws, however, easily last a very long time – they are used to give them a bit of sun and a little water and they will last for weeks!

3. They can be used as a centrepiece

A lobster claw bouquet is perfect for those who want to have something different in their centrepieces. Our own Bella Bermuda bouquet is a combination of yellows, reds, and purples, which makes it stand out wonderfully from your traditional pink and white bouquets. Read more here about our advice on picking the perfect centrepiece arrangement for your wedding!

4. They have come a long way to get to the UK

While our bouquets are cut and arranged in Birmingham (which lets us do next-day delivery across the UK, and same day Birmingham delivery too!), the Heliconia is originally from Central and South America and from a number of southern islands in the Pacific Ocean.

Sadly, many of the Heliconia varities are threatened or endangered species, as much of where they natively grow in places like Brazil has been converted to agriculture. However, the growing boom in popularity of the flower for bouquets and floral arrangements is keeping the breed alive!

As more and more people use them to decorate their homes, the more demand for the flowers exist, which means the more people grow them and keep this wonderful species flourishing.

5. There are so many varieties

Of the Heliconia genus, there are almost 200 different known subspecies that have been discovered.

They range from the Ecuadorian heliconias used in our Bella Bermuda bouquet, to the Heliconia Angusta also known as the 'Christmas Heliconia' due to its distinctive red-and-white flowers on the stem.

It's sad that so many of these are classified as vulnerable by the World Conservation Union and the IUCN (International Union for the Conservation of Nature). But the stunning variety of these flowers from Chile to Costa Rica, from Mexico to the West Indies, means there are many places to go and visit to see these flowers bloom while still in the ground.

6. They are constantly loved by our customers!

Time and time again since we've started stocking the Bella Bermuda bouquet, we have had fantastic Fleur de Luxe reviews on TrustPilot raving about these gorgeous bouquets. Here's what customers have said already about our lobster claw bouquets:

  • "Really pleased with the look of this, and it smells amazing!"
  • "A beautiful unique centrepiece for my wedding table"
  • "These are so pretty! I can't wait to put these on our tables."

These are the six reasons we love our heliconias, more often known as lobster-claw bouquets. But why do you love these flowers? Or is there another tropical treat that's close to your heart? Let us know and share the flowers that make you smile!
