Help! My Flowers are Dying!

Published:2021-07-23 00:00:00

Can you imagine the horror of receiving a next-day flower delivery only to see your beautiful flowers die after just a few days? This is a problem people face far too often – you're not alone!

If you want your flowers to go the distance, we have the perfect advice for you. Follow our tips and tricks to ensure your next-day flower delivery gives you a gorgeous bouquet that will last for weeks!

1. Give Your Flowers More Water!

All flowers are different. But no matter what, every bouquet needs something vital to survive: water. Even though they have been plucked and put together in their perfect form, they still need water to prevent degradation.

It's easy to get so excited about how beautiful your new bouquet is, that you forget about watering them. But even after traveling for just a few hours from the florists to your home, many bouquets require more water than usual. So, try to place your new bouquet in a vase full of water.

If you really want your bouquet to last, add some sugar, wine or vinegar to create a makeshift pickle that will keep your delivered flowers look alive for much longer than they usually would.

2. Trim your Bouquet's Stem

While our bouquets come with their stems properly trimmed to a size appropriate for most vases, sometimes you might notice that your arrangement is a little too full. This can cause your bouquet to struggle to stay upright, and instead start to droop, and speed up the wilting process.

If this happens to you, recut your bouquet (or find a larger vase) to help your flowers keep their natural beauty. Even if your bouquet fits perfectly, recut your flower's stems every few days. Cells grow over the end of flower stems when they are cut from the plant after a few days, if the flower is still alive, to seal the cut much like humans and animals. But that would prevent any water reaching the plant - and sealing its fate to a much earlier wilt. So cut the stem to keep your bouquet able to drink water and alive for weeks to come!

3. Remove Dead Petals and Dying Flowers

It sounds fairly obvious, but you'd be shocked at how many people forget this.

Removing dead petals and dying flowers will give your bouquet a chance at looking its best. Remove any dried-up petals or wilting blooms that would only detract from your flower's natural beauty. That prevents bacterial rot setting in, which would hasten on your bouquet's deca4. Use Flower Food!

Flowers need food, just like we do! Flower food is a mix of fertilizer and plant food that provides your bouquet with the nutrients it needs to stay healthy.

The next time you're adding water, add flower food as well. It's quick, simple - and will make all the difference in keeping those petals perky for days to come!

If your bouquet comes with flower food on its size, just pour it into your bouquet alongside room temperature water to give your bouquet the best chance to survive with the nutrients and goodies plants need to survive.

5. Add a (quarter of a) shot of vodka

Yes, you read that right. Add a quarter of a shot (or just a few drops in a small vase) of vodka to your vase, alongside some flower food mix and a good amount of water, and you'll be able to enjoy flowers for up to two weeks longer after delivery.

As we have discussed already in ten tips to help keep your flowers looking fresh, Vodka inhibits the plant hormones that contribute to decay and death. By pouring just a few drops of Vegas water into your vase, you can thus give your flowers a much-needed boost of life and extend their lifespan.

Once you've added your flowers to the vase with vodka, make sure that they're still getting topped up with fresh water every few days.
